The Landscape Industry Certifiedprogram is an international (Canada and U.S.) accreditation program that sets standards for job skills and best practices for individuals working in the green industry. The program was developed by industry professionals and has undergone rigorous occupational analysis to ensure the Certification designations meet current standards and best practices in industry, and comply with requirements for the program to be recognized by the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (formerly National Organization for Competency Assurance NOCA). In Canada, the Landscape Industry Certified program is administered by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA), and exam opportunities are provided regionally. In Alberta, Landscape Alberta hosts Certification exams for all three program designations: Landscape Industry Certified Technician - designed for employees in the green industry who are involved in the technical application of skill and knowledge. Candidates must pass a written exam in addition to hands-on, skills demonstration test performed at a test site that approximates real-life scenarios. The candidate is judged on work methods, adherence to best practices, and safety ideals. In Canada, Technician candidates can specialize in in Hardscape Installation, Softscape Installation, Turf Maintenance, Ornamental Maintenance, Interior, and Retail Horticulturalist. This program focuses on the core business skills required to run a successful operation, and candidates earn their certification by passing a series of written tests covering human resources; strategic planning; risk, law and contracts; corporate financial management; leadership and corporate citizenship; marketing and sales management; production/operations and horticulture; and interior/exterior technical subjects. Landscape Industry Certified Designer- created to provide an experienced individual with a means of proving a high degree of proficiency as a landscape designer. The certification process consists of the completion of a written test and a portfolio evaluation.
