Journeyman Landscape Horticulturist

The Landscape Gardener Apprenticeship program in Alberta offers an abundance of hands-on learning in both the hard landscape skills of paver, water gardens, wood construction, irrigation and surveying; balanced with the soft landscape skills of plant identification, tree planting, soil analysis, plant production and landscape design. As a Journeyman Landscape Horticulturist (formerly Gardener), you are in high demand within industry employers.

Apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job and technical training in an earning-while-learning arrangement that leads to certification as a Journeyman in a recognized trade. Apprenticeship programs are under the administration of the Government of Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training. Note that the designation title “Landscape Gardener” is transitioning to “Landscape Horticulturist” nation-wide.

Journeyman Landscape Horticulturist is a recognized RED SEAL trade, meaning those who achieve Journeyman certification are recognized nationally, and can work anywhere in Canada where this trade is designated. They have qualified by passing industry-developed interprovincial examinations that are based on nationally validated occupational analyses. Note that both provincial and federal governments have grant programs, scholarships, and access to other assistance for candidates and employers interested in apprenticeship – the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training website provides contact information for regional service offices where you can get assistance and advice.
